2021 – Ambition and Mindset

This time last year, we wrote about Scotland’s business landscape flexing and bending with the changes that had been enforced, endured, and embraced. Throughout 2020 there were some evident and surprising trends emerging, particularly in recruitment, from the increase in the demand for interim professionals to digital hiring and a new way of hybrid working.

What have we witnessed, experienced, and been immersed in throughout 2021?

While many of the same trends ring true for us in 2021, we have noticed with clients, candidates, and within our own business that good leadership is at the forefront of a successful year. The skills of a leader will constantly be challenged; it is the style of leadership that underpins the fate of the business. We focus heavily on conscious leadership with a positive mindset and ambition; we want to build success within our company and for our clients.

As we enter MM Search’s fourth year in business, we are making further investment into the company, and we will be moving into a larger office in Glasgow. A larger space will allow us to collaborate as a team even better as we move towards a blended working approach with a mix of office-based and working-from-home days. We have also grown (again!) and offered many of our existing staff promoted positions as they develop within the company. Plus, we plan more significant hires this year – watch this space to meet our new faces of 2022.

In the summer, we were also delighted to launch our first Executive Intern Programme with rising stars from top Scottish Universities. In collaboration with the Saltire Scholar internship programme, run by Entrepreneurial Scotland, we offered two paid internships to St. Andrews University and Heriot-Watt University students. This was an excellent experience for us, and we hope the students too!

While the last year has certainly presented challenges for our clients and us, overall, it has been an overwhelmingly positive period for the business. We had ambitious plans for our third year, and the fact that we have been able to achieve and exceed our targets with growth from last year is a testament to our talented team and our innovative approach to executive search. This year we were pleased to report a significant increase in turnover and several high-profile new clients, including FirstPoint USA, Snappy Shopper, Zotefoams, SHS Trading Ltd, and Innis & Gunn.

As well as financial growth, our portfolio of overseas appointments has developed with successful placements worldwide, including in China, Poland, India and the USA. This international expansion has proved that geography and travel restrictions are not a barrier to placing talent with the right skills and experience (and mindset!). This success also led MM Search to be shortlisted at the prestigious Global Recruiter UK Awards 2021 in the Best Newcomer category, a massive coup for our business. We might not have won, but we were delighted to have been shortlisted.

Looking ahead, we don’t know what 2022 will bring, but with the lessons learnt and the can-do attitude of the past year in place, plus a new office on the horizon with new hires, we are up for the challenge.
