MM Search Business Delivery Manager, Rory Cleat explains why a surge in recruitment activity in Scotland is seeing an increased demand for staff in both temporary and permanent positions…

The March 2022 edition of the Royal Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs Survey highlights that March saw permanent placements increase at the second-fastest rate as demand across Scotland grew for a 14th successive month.

The engineering and construction sector and the tech sector are among those with the greatest demand for candidates, and the volume of vacancies is partially attributed to greater market confidence post-pandemic.

The mood among our clients is optimistic as the Covid-19 restrictions continue to lift. After a long period of uncertainty, many of our clients are now ready to make strides toward growing their businesses. An essential part of this is recruiting the talent that will support them in achieving their goals.

Record-breaking salaries

While the demand for talent continues to soar, the ongoing labour shortage presents a significant challenge in filling these roles. This combination of heightened hiring activity and a reduced supply of candidates has led to a marked increase in the salaries offered for vacant positions. The RBS Report on Jobs Survey notes that the latest rise in permanent starting salaries is the fastest.

Many businesses are opting to offer generous packages to resolve the gap between the demand for and the availability of talent. This makes for a very exciting time for job seekers who may find that the job market is currently working in their favour.

While inflated salaries and benefits packages may help generate activity around a vacancy, combining this strategy with the appointment of a recruitment specialist can help ensure the interest of the most qualified candidates.

In this competitive climate, passive candidates are more important than ever. Collaborating with a recruitment partner with expertise and experience in your sector can provide access to talent that may otherwise remain untapped. The importance of a strong network of contacts really can’t be overstated, particularly when demand is this strong and candidates have a wealth of options. A recruitment partner can help you highlight the benefits and advantages of working for your business and make candidate placements that will go the distance.
