Home or away, the hybrid question

September 2022

Over the summer months, MM Search’s Business Delivery Manager, Euan Bodie, has been using LinkedIn polls to gain insight into his community’s working scenarios and opinions. Here he shares the results of his most recent poll…

In my previous LinkedIn poll, I uncovered that 25% of respondents considered working from home or hybrid working options to be the most critical factor when considering a new role. To gain further insight into this hot topic, I shared a further poll in July to find out where my community currently work from.

The vast majority of those who participated in the poll selected the ‘hybrid’ option, with 74% of the 82 participants revealing that their working week involves a mix of home-based and office-based work. The remaining participants were almost evenly divided, with 13% stating that they are based in the office five days a week and 12% working remotely all the time.

Considering this poll alongside the 2022 PwC Hopes and Fears Survey, which found that 62% of the 52,000 respondents would prefer a mix of in-person and remote work, it seems that flexibility is important to many employees. There are numerous reasons for the popularity of hybrid set-ups, and financial benefits, fewer distractions and improved productivity have all been cited as arguments for preferring this model. Furthermore, a study by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) found that 47% of those who worked from home in some capacity reported improved well-being.

“Hybrid working has had a huge impact on my work-life balance,” says Phil Gillan, RPS Group. “Before the pandemic, I undertook a lengthy commute each day which meant that I would often be home after my children had gone to bed and struggled to find time for exercise. By opting to work from home two days a week, I can spend more time with my family, and I’ve been able to commit to Triathlon training.”

While hybrid working may offer substantial benefits for some employees, several areas must be addressed to ensure a smooth transition into a new working model.

Over the coming months, we’ll conduct more polls on our LinkedIn channel to bring you more industry insights and trends. Contact the team today if you have a question you would like to put to our audience.
