Last week, we hosted our inaugural Non-Exec Academy event, which stemmed from the success of our online forum. The event took place at One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow, with a full house of senior leaders, experienced Non-Executive Directors, and aspiring Non-Execs.
We were honoured to have three distinguished Scottish Non-Executives lead the Q&A session: Belinda Roberts MBE, CEO of WeDo Scotland; Neil Stevenson, CEO of Scottish Legal Complaints Commission; and Sheila Gunn, Non-Executive Director of various organisations.
The event began with a lively networking session over coffee, followed by brief introductions from our three speakers, who shared their experiences and insights as Non-Execs.
Some key takeaways from the audience’s questions included top tips for securing your first Non-Exec appointment: Sheila advised conducting due diligence and considering your reputational liability, while Neil emphasised putting in the time and effort for your search and applications, just as you would for any career opportunity.
Belinda shared her experience of building her Non-Exec portfolio since her early 30s, stressing the importance of not waiting until retirement to start building your Non-Exec career.
The Non-Exec Academy online community, launched in 2020 by the MM team, continues to grow, offering exclusive access to videos from seasoned Non-Execs like Sir Harry Burns, Julie Ashworth, and David Duke. Following the tremendous success of our first in-person event, we’re excited to announce another event in the summer of 2023.
