Sport is hugely important to many members of the MM Search team and our business ethos and mindset aligns with that of top athletes and competitors. This is why we have launched MM Athletes, an exciting new initiative that will see MM Search support sportspeople across a range of different disciplines.

This week we are focusing on the legendary weightlifter George Byng. Hailing from Greenock, George has over 70 years of weightlifting experience and has competed at the top level in events worldwide. This includes representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and was Scottish National Olympic Weightlifting Team Coach from 1974 to 1981 coaching the Scottish weightlifting team at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada to Silver and Bronze medals and two Fourth places from a seven-man team.

Now, at the age of 86, George is about to tackle his next challenge as he prepares to take part in the International Weightlifting Federation World Masters Championships. Held in Florida in December 2022, the Masters Championships is an annual event and includes male and female weightlifters of a wide range of ages. Around 1200 competitors are taking part and George will be one of the 15 men and 10 women that make up the British team. “I am the oldest British male lifter taking part,” says George. “This will be my eighth World Masters since I first took part in 1992. I have competed all over the world and in 2001, I took home the silver medal from the Championships in Greece.

“I’m so grateful to have the support of MM Search for the Championships in 2022. My last World Championship was in 2011 in Cyprus and I’m excited to take part alongside the rest of the British team. This may be my last hurrah, but I’ll do my best!”

MM Search is delighted to be able to offer George financial support towards his competition as well as some MM Search merchandise to enjoy. “George is an absolute inspiration,” says Founding Managing Partner, Derek MacFeate. “I first met George when he coached the 1st XV weight training sessions when I was a youth player at Greenock Wanderers, all those years ago! I was blown away by his passion for weightlifting then and even now his passion is still strong. George has dedicated 70 years of his life to the sport he loves, and I’m thrilled that we are able to support him in his forthcoming competition.”

The World Masters Championship will take place from the 1st to 10th December 2022 and the MM Search team wish George and the rest of the British team the very best of luck!
