GWRFC sees surge in interest in ladies’ team
MM Search has been the main sponsor of Greenock Wanderers Rugby Football Club since the business launched in 2018. During that time, MM Search has witnessed the club go from strength to strength as the various teams continue to grow and develop.
With Wee Wandies starting from as young as three years old, Mini and Micro teams for primary school aged children, a range of youth teams and men’s and women’s teams, GWRFC truly offers something for everyone. In recent months, successful roadshows have led to an influx of new players, particularly within the Ladies’ team which has seen an incredible surge in popularity.
“The team is like a second family to me,” says Greenock Wanderer’s Ladies’ captain, Beverley Addison. “I started playing with the team in 2015 and back then there was sometimes only four of us there for training! Since then, we have grown so much and during our most recent recruitment drive this summer, our numbers have exploded with 26 players joining the fold. This means we now also have a second XV alongside our first XV which is incredible. It really highlights the work that has gone in to make GWRFC a good place to be, as well as a team that gets good results.
“The main reason women give for joining us is that they want to challenge themselves and do something that’s just for them. A lot of our players are mums or carers or have jobs that ask a lot of them, and so playing rugby gives them an outlet where they can focus on themselves other people will support them. It’s also about making friends and our team is made up of a wide array of people of all different ages and stages of life – you get to meet lots of people you might never have crossed paths with otherwise.”
In addition to the tireless efforts of the team, club and coaches, Beverley says that the sponsors are also invaluable to the Greenock Wanderers, “The sponsors are everything – we couldn’t do a thing that we do without them. I’m quite involved with that side of the club and it’s not just about their financial input, the support they offer us is so important too. A lot of them are always at the games and we can hear them on the side of the pitch cheering us on.
“I can’t believe that we’ve managed to grow the team so much and created something that so many women want to be involved with – we would never have been able to do that without the support of all the sponsors.”
“I have been involved with the club for years and it is wonderful to see the Greenock Wanderers continue to flourish,” says MM Search’s Founding Managing Partner, Derek MacFeate. “Every one of the teams shows incredible dedication to the sport both on and off the field, and we are delighted to be able to support their progress.
